New Music Thursday: Julia Michaels

“Cause we got the kind of love it takes to solve ’em”

Who doesn’t have love related issues nowadays? I could personally write a whole album about mine. Thankfully I don’t have to for now because newcomer Julia Michaels did it for me. Born on November 13th, 1993 in Davenport, Iowa Julia Carin Cavazos made her debut in the industry at age 16. At 19 she met her songwriting partner Justin Tranter with whom she frequently collaborates. Her songwriting resume include John Legend, Fifth Harmony, Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato, Nick Jonas, Selena Gomez and many more artists.

In January 2017, Julia released her first solo single, “Issues” it was the first time she’d written a song that sounded so much like herself that she couldn’t picture anyone else singing it, although many big name artists fought for the song Julia decided to release it herself. And boy am I happy she did because I would have never heard of this captivating singer with a raspy voice that can make you starry-eyed. I found myself listening to “Issues” all week when I first heard it. I just couldn’t bring myself to listen to any other song. She hit every nerve she possibly could have. I’ve been patiently waiting for her upcoming EP Nervous System (Julia if you’re reading this drop it all ready!). Thankfully her second single “Uh huh” was released on June 2, 2017 and let me tell you that she did not disappoint me. I was afraid that she might not be able to release a new single that came close to the brilliance that is “Issues” but I was amazed by her knack for writing yet again.

“I don’t know what it is I feel but I know it’s my emotions going in for the kill like uh huh”

Her gentle, loving, humble soul makes you want to be her best-friend and do all these fun things together but at the same time keep her in a bubble to protect her from the real world. At age 23 she accomplished things the rest of us can only dream of. She gives me hope that my dreams aren’t that far out of reach as I thought they were. I can’t wait to be able to sing along to every one of her songs at one of her concerts once Nervous System is released.

I will be writing an updated New Music Thursday once Nervous System is released to talk about it in detail.

  1. This is such a fun blog. I love music and back in college it was such a big part of me. These days as a mom, I pretty much listen to what my kids like, but I love that song Issues as well!

  2. I am obsessed with that song! I think it’s awesome when someone goes from songrwriter to singing their own material. Must be empowering
